Is iPhone Still the King of Smartphones?

Before iPhone, smartphones had another definition. They could send messages, set up reminders, make calls and in rare cases send emails. But when  Apple brought its first smartphone, every thing just changed. Back in January 9, 2007, Apple announced its First Generation iPhone (1G). Whole world was amazed by this and admiring for what Apple had brought for them. It was first time when a smartphone has a touch sensitive screen. But as time passed lot of things has changed and now conditions are something else.

In past two years Apple has monitored fall in its iPhone, iPod and iPad total sales due to many reasons. People are shifting from iOS (Apple's mobile Operating System) to other mobile operating systems like Android, BlackBerry OS, Symbian, Windows for Mobile. Even we are going to have Ubuntu based smartphones in coming months. With so many competitors in the market performing very well, Apple lost its strong grip in the market. Some of the reasons that lead to iPhone downfall are popularity of Android as most used operating system, too high price tag users have to pay for Apple products, Low level of customization available on Apple devices. But on the another hand, Apple has best apps in the market and that too of very high quality and performance which is yet not available in any other app market right now. Even Android, which has second largest App Collection in its Play Store, the quality of apps is not up to the mark.

One major factor that led users to shift from iOS to other Mobile Operating Systems is Least Customization options in iOS ecosystem. Home screen is same right from the First Generation iPhone to their latest device, iPhone 5. There are very few changes though, but those have little or no meaning. Simple background wallpaper (Live wallpaper support in iOS 7 only) with fixed grid of icons that cannot be changed. No support for Widgets except some non-editable widgets in the notification panel. Though notification panel in iOS 7 has many great features. In picture, see that new notification panel has been changed to improve navigation and manage notifications.

As shown in picture, almost every operating system has quick settings toggle in notification panel which drops from top. In iOS 7, Apple introduced control center, different name same function, which allows users to toggle quick settings.

Now every new day an Android based mobile phone is being launched and the amount of sale has surpassed the iPhone sale. Also new operating systems like Ubuntu has many great features, making it difficult for Apple to have same share in smartphone market as it was in the beginning. It is very clear that Apple  has to bring something different in the market to get back its rivalry. It is no doubt that Apple has still the best quality app ecosystem, but now user wants more than Apple is giving them now. we hope that with the beginning of sales of iPhone Mini (if coming), Apple would capture some market share back.

Another major fallback that apple has is screen size of iPhone. Now this is what Steve Jobs took very seriously and current CEO, Tim Cook is also following. Jobs always wanted to restrict screen size to best fit in hands, all corners accessible with single hand use of iPhone. In September, 2012 Apple took a very hard decision and move to 4 inch screen for their next iPhone (iPhone 5). Now rumors say that next iPhone could possibly have a 4.3 inch display, which is very necessary in this environment. Android and other operating systems have bigger screen phones and they are getting very positive response from users.  It is possible that Apple can move to more bigger screen segment and create trouble for these big phones. Right now everything can just be guessed. Nothing is clear and we have to wait and watch what comes at the end of the year Twenty Thirteen.

No one can predict how market is going to behave. Apple was once the king of smartphones. With every new launch they have a completely new technology to show. We still believe that in future also Apple will continue this.
