Ransomware is a kind of malware that restrict you from accessing your computer untill you pay money to attacker and take up all accessing rights from you and demands for money (ie. ransom) to get back your all data. It basically encrypt your data and even you are able to open your files , they are not readable and attacker has only one intention that he/she demands for money and doesn't decrypt your data untill you pay ransom.
Ransomware are basically of two types :
  • Lock screen ransomware
Lock screen ransomware make use of screen or any webpage to lock your screen and don't allow you to access your computer.
  • Encryption ransomware
Encryption ransomware use encryption technique and encrypt your all useful data and thus making it unaccessable.
Some ransomwares show a notification saying that your local authorities have detected some kind of illegal activity on your computer and demands for money in order to access files further.

Be careful what you click!

Increasing number of cybercriminals are using deceptive links and even websites to install malicious software like ransomware which can hold your stuff for ransom and infected computers shows the notification of demanded money in order to get access.
There are also some good habits that can keep you safe from such kind of malwares.
  • Install a good antivirus in your system and regularly update it latest virus and malware definitions.
  • Keep your computer updated with latest security patches.
  • Keep your software updated.
  • Backup your data either in external drives or online drives like google drive ,skydrive etc. whatever suites you best.

Note:- If your computer is infected by a ransomware then paying money is not the solution of problem as it will boost the confidence of attacker and he/she may demands for more. Microsoft never recommend paying money because these messages are not from legitimate authority but from third party and there is no guarantee that after paying your computer will be in usable state.
