ATM (Automated Teller Machine) came into existence in 1960.It's basic aim was the provision of cash for its customers wherever required from nearest ATM.It proved out to be the best technological development as it helps all the financial institutions to provide 24 X 7 services for their customers and also provide the convenience for the customers to get cash wherever they are in need.
Financial institutions also have gone through strategies to provide security to their ATMs which includes:

  • Choosing a safe location for ATM installation.
  • Installation of surveillance camera.
  • Anti-card skimmming solutions.
  • Remote monitoring.
  • Increasing customer awareness.
What type of Risks are involved:
  • Fraudsters do some type of tempering with ATM in which they put their illegal card reading device in any of ATM slot which is not visible to you.These devices keep out information from magnetic strip and use it for counterfiet card.They also make use of tiny camers which track your PIN.
  • The fraudster make use of folded plastic film of ATM so that machine will hold the card and not allow to reject it.
  • They make use of fake cards that contains the bank account information they gather from tiny cameras and devices.
  • One of the most interesting method used by fraudster is they make use of duplicate cards that contains the software which is capable of recording the passwords typed on ATM machines.

Some tips and guidelines

  • Protect your PIN and don't share it with anyone and always cover your keypad while entering your PIN.
  • Steer clear of jammed ATM machines and Sometimes fraudsters disable other ATMs in thae area to draw attention of all users to a single ATM which has skimmer device on it.
  • Keep track of your transactions of credit cards as well as on bank account details.
  • Keep a strong password and easy to remember which is neither related to your name ,address or your likes and dislikes and change it on regular interval.
  • Update your details if there is any address change.
  • Enable your browser with phishing filters and try to read emails in plain text and never click on suspecious links in emails.
  • Never provide your personal information including bank details on phones.Bank or credit card providers never ask you for such details.
  • Check your banks accounts regularly for any unusual transaction and do check your personal details.
