It's great news for all those who usually use text extraction tools for taking out text from pictures. Today Microsoft announced that SkyDrive is enabled for auto text extraction (using Optical Character Recognition) from your clicked pictures, whether it is a picture of magazine, a chart or any image having text in it.

Method by which it is done?
For this to happen, you have to install SkyDrive app on your windows phone. Then login the app with your ID and  password. Once logged in, whenever you will take a photo from your phone, it will automatically be uploaded to your "Camera Roll" folder in SkyDrive.

After that SkyDrive's Optical character recognition tool scans for possible images having text in them. It then processes those selected images to extract all the text and then displays that to you in the properties pane at right hand side (Online at skyDrive.com). It does so without your notice, that means you don't have to give a command or turn on and off a feature for enabling and disabling it.

Now whenever you will access your photos at SkyDrive.com, extracted text will be shown at the right side of the photo you are watching. See the image below to get more knowledge. Taken from Microsoft blog opened on my iPod (See source for original post).

Languages supported
Optical Text Recognition (OCR) tool will work in multiple languages. List is shown below.
1. English
2. Portuguese
3. Spanish
4. French
5. German

Regardless of your country, OCR will extract text in any one of the above languages.
Also SkyDrive team is working with with Bing to make this OCR tool much better in future in order to support more picture formats and for accurate text recognition.

Now a big question arises about the security. We expect SkyDrive to include an option for turning ON and OFF this feature for particular images having sensitive content (maybe photo of your ATM card or a piece of paper with confidential data). But at positive side, this tool is great and works very fine. It is also clear that Microsoft has some big plans for making cloud experience a complete package for you. After this addition, SkyDrive took clear edge from other cloud storage services like Google Drive, DropBox, etc.

Please do share your experiece after using the OCR tool in SkyDrive.com
